General Wittering
Having just Googled my name, I have discovered that www.normanralph.com is the first result returned! That’s quite cool. I did the same for Liz and her site is the fifth result returned. I should probably know this but does anyone know how Google’s ranking works?
On a different note, I found Liz’s limit last night. Cryptic? Yes, it is meant to be.
Seetickets.com have also excelled themselves, I bought The Who tickets last night and they arrived this morning! That is service. Just waiting on another delivery now, which I hope will come this week.
Anyway, off to watch Blackpool lose to Oldham in the League One Playoff semi-final then hopefully see Man Utd beat the crap out of Chelsea in the FA Cup later on.
I think their algorithm is probably pretty well protected, but it has to do with a whole load of things, like the words in the site (obviously), the words used to link to the site, it probably looks at the URL, the words that are close to the words you searched on, the words that others use to link to your site and stuff like that. I am sure there are many other things, we did a bit about search engins and stuff in the first year. I am sure someone better at this than me can tell you more!
Google ranking works like the world of academia and the publishing of papers. In acedemic papers, a paper that is very well referenced by others is considered to be a very worthwhile, relevent and trustworthy source. As such when applied to google it is based on who links to who. Furthermore if you get a link to your site from another site with a very high ranking then that link is worth more than one from a lower ranking site. This principal is used to build a tree for searching and the delivery of results.
Further factors that contribute to the accuracy of the above search include; text used to formulate a link, content of the page title tags, content of heading tags such as h1 and h2, layout of the urls (myblog.org/friends/gossip is better than myblog.org/?c=12&b=254) and a whole tonne of other stuff. I do SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) for clients sites so if you want some professional advice for a site then feel free to give me a call to discuss.
Woah, no one ever did that before .. like seriously ..
